ACCESS Healthy Kids Program Shopping on a Budget

Our Healthy Kids Project (HKP) here at ACCESS aims to promote healthier lifestyles for children, ages 5-10 years old, and their parents through active learning about physical activity, nutrition, environmental health and mental health. The goal of HKP is to try to help make living a healthy life fun and easy while engaging not only children but parents. This is the perfect opportunity for families to learn how daily behaviors impact personal health now and their influence on future health. It is possible to make a large impact by just a small change. Group sessions include height, weight, and blood pressure screening for children, health screenings and referrals, food preparation techniques, how to read nutrition labels, physical activity opportunities, safer household cleansers and a fieldtrip for families who attend regularly.

6 Shopping Carts. Seven Kids. One Store. Trader Joes #671

Meet the Busy Browns. Our family of nine goes on a shopping adventure every Sunday at Trader Joes 671, a unique grocery store. The kids love this store because Trader Joe’s loves kids. Chuck E. Cheese is nextdoor to Trader Joe’s, but TJ’s throws a party everytime we shop!

The children all get little carts, they get Monkey Treats when they play “Find the Monkey”. The love to help shop and look at all the fun murals on the walls. Then they get free stickers and colorful balloons.

We do almost all our shopping here, the food is great, prices on organics are great, and they have Dunkers. All the people who work in the store are always happy to see us, except for the one lonely grump, but we try not to get in that check-out line. Grumps add character I guess…

We all love Trader Joes 671! Not long ago we were shopping and someone asked me “Is this a Birhday Party?” I smiled and said “No, this is a family.” But that gives me an idea…

Maybe the next Birthday Party will be at TJ’s! Cake, Ballons, Games… Free Samples, Music, Nice People, we wouldn’t even need decorations!
